Imagine, if you will ... a recreation area located predominately in Stephens County - a recreation area extending from Tallulah Gorge in Habersham County, down along Panther Creek, the Tugaloo River, and upper Lake Hartwell, all the way to the bridge area at US 123 in Stephens County.

Imagine, if you will ...hiking and biking and walking trails through the forest, picnicking and fishing along the creek -- bald eagles, and otter and trout and deer. Imagine an American Heritage interpretive/environmental education center, including a reconstructed Native American village as well as a demonstration area for a typical early American home and farm. Imagine a rebuilt Prather's Bridge, covered as in days gone by.

Imagine, if you will ... Travelers Rest, busy with tourists and travelers once again visiting our community. Imagine hikers and bikers and canoeists and kayakers---singles and couples and families and groups, all coming to our community to enjoy its natural beauty and its history.

Imagine, if you will ... one of the finest recreational/educational areas in the Southeastern United States...

You have just imagined.... THE TUGALOO CORRIDOR.

Come, be a part of this great adventure...

The Corridor

As envisioned, the corridor will extend from Tallulah Gorge to the US 123 Broken Bridge Area along the Stephens County--South Carolina border.

The only remaining unimpounded portion of the Tugaloo River is that 6 mile portion extending from Yonah Dam south to Lake Hartwell. Within the corridor including this river areas perfect for all types of outdoor recreation. Within the corridor are the sites of Travelers Rest, the old Prather's Bridge, and the prehistoric Estatoe Indian Village. All are envisioned to be developed for recreation and education of the more than 300,000 school children located within two hours of the site.

The Heritage Center

A key portion of the corridor development is an 87 acre site, located on the river with approximately 4,000 feet of river frontage. This is the site of the old Estatoe Indian Village, which, in the 1700's, had a population of more than 600 Native American men, women, and children. Artifacts found on this site have been dated back 2500 years, we are told. In the past, this site has been explored by both the University of Georgia and the Smithsonian Institute. In later years, the land was farmed by early nonnative settlers who came to the area.

The plan is to build a Heritage Center on this 87 acre tract, including a partially reconstructed Native American village. A part of the site, too, contains undisturbed wetlands which are perfect for wildlife observation.

The educational potential for the area's 300,000 school children is exciting, particularly when a visit to the Heritage Center can be combined with a visit to Traveler's Rest and the restored Prather's Bridge.
