  • 1998 - first meetings of a group of interested citizens were held to discuss the possible purchase of 92 acres of property containing the Cherokee town of Estatoe on the Tugaloo River.
  • The potential for purchase arose from conversations between Ray Ward and Channing Hayes.
  • May, 1999 - The Stephens Co. Foundation was chartered as a not-for-profit corporation formed for the primary purpose of acquiring the Estatoe site property.
  • The Foundation contacted the Trust for Public Lands (Kevin Johnson). Their interest evolved into purchase of option to buy the Estatoe property.
  • The property was purchased by TPL and was transfered to SCF through a loan with a balance of ~$300,000.
